Russian sites are attempting to link to other sites and download Viruses

There are a series of Russian websites (*.ru) that have placed website names in the description meta tags of their sites, so search engines will pick them up.  These sites are heavily objectionable, you can't get out of them, and they try to download a virus. If someone gets this site when they are expecting a church or business, it can cause an incredible amount of problems, especially if their anti-virus is not current.

If someone uses MSN and searched for a website, it can show up, but it may be way down the list. If they put quotes ("sitename.com") it pulls it up higher.  Click on this link for more information and how I found one of these sites when I searched for Microsoft.com.

It kind of takes the perfect storm for this to happen since the person has to search for the website and not just the business name. So it the business is Acme & Co, and the website is www.acmeco.com, they need to search on ameco.com. At first it seemed to only be Live Search, which is MSN, but today I found some in Yahoo and Google.

Test it Yourself

If you want to check your site, go to msn.com and search for "yourwebsite.com," (Use quotes around your website name) look at the very bottom line of the search results and see if the link is something ".ru." DO NOT CLICK ON THAT LINK, IT WILL EAT UP YOUR COMPUTER!  The further down the list, the better off you are and with Microsoft I had to add front.ru (seems to be the most common site) and below is what sowed up, the actual links re removed.

With Live Search I used   "Microsoft.com" front.ru

This is what was on page 3:

  • seuxual abuse, zatch bell charater, eastergames, quiznos menu, talk ...

    ... court - clark county justice court - uop.phoenix.edu - myuop.phoenix.edu - my uop.phoenix.edu - my.uop.phoenix.edu - student.phoenix.edu - myphoenix.edu - premium.microsoft.com ...

    • blandlygla.front.ru/16.htm

So what can you do about it? There is no quick fix, but there are things that can be done and if you did this test and it show up on the 2-3 pages give me a call (865-693-0900  ext-11) and we can discuss it. What needs to be done is have an overall strategy, that goes beyond your website, that will force something like this further down the list. I have sent information to Live Search and I am sure this threat will pass, but it will come back again and when it does you need to be better prepared.
